Regarding your friend’s questions, it really depends on whether he wants to take portrait shots mostly indoors or outdoors. For a similar price, 85/1.8 is a better portrait lens with nicer bokeh and supposedly sharper wide open, but could be a tad bit too long indoors on an APS size camera. If he is tight on budget, maybe 50/1.8 is also a reasonable choice for indoor use. Optically it’s quite similar to 50/1.4, but only 20% in price.
There aren’t many choices for macro lens other than Canon 100/2.8 (or Tamron 90/2.8, not much cheaper though). It’s just not realistic to have macro performance similar to a small DC on a DSLR without a macro lens (or extension tubes and close-up filters, but not as convenient).
He may want to buy the kit, if he is planning to shoot landscape at all or
to have a general travel lens. Other good alternatives to the kit lens are
Canon 17-85IS, Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5, Tamron 17-50/2.8 and Canon 17-40/4L, all four in the range of 350-600 dollars. The first three are crop frame lenses, while the last one is full frame. I am thinking of buying the new Tamron one myself. Sigma 18-125 or Tamron 18-200 are also worth
considering, if he prefers to have an all-in-one lens, not my type though.
The kit lens is optically reasonable, but you pay for what you get.
A few good website with reviews and forums for Canon gears:
There is also the good old dpreview.com for camera body reviews, but their forum is filled with rich bastards who have little interest in photography besides buying gears. Photo.net is a great site for serious photography. Xitek.com is probably one of the most populated Chinese sites.
Finally, a friendly reminder, Canon is most likely going to have a
replacement body for 350D out this fall around September, maybe 370D/400D? In addition if your friend is a guy, I would suggest him try a 350d in shop first, because the grip is too small sometimes for a male to hold comfortably.
